US$11.9 Million Grant Expands Women's HIV Study to Southeast

August 16, 2013

A five-year grant of $11.9 million was awarded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to researchers at Emory University in Atlanta as part of a recent expansion of the Women's Interagency HIV Cohort Study (WIHS). NIH started WIHS in 1993 at six sites primarily in the Midwest, West Coast and East Coast to study women who are either HIV-infected or at risk for the infection. The new grant at Emory will create one of four new sites located in the South and will provide new research opportunities in women's health and HIV/AIDS in Georgia and the Atlanta area. Focus of Emory's WIHS research will be secondary HIV/AIDS prevention for women through clinical interventions along with immunological, pharmacological, epidemiological and behavioral research.
