The National Science Foundation has awarded a University of Alabama anthropology doctoral student a $16,000 grant to research the influence of social factors on the spread of HIV/AIDS. The student formulated her research project while interviewing black women and their daughters for her master's thesis project and finding that many individuals had incorrect beliefs about HIV/AIDS. Some women told her that they could identify individuals who had HIV/AIDS by their appearance. The student planned to study how these misperceptions might impact young women's risks of contracting the virus.
