Forgive me, Internets, but I'm going to toot our own horn for a moment.
We got word late last week that we won an award with significant meaning to us. The National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA) announced the winners of its annual Excellence in Journalism Award on July 31, and we snagged the Excellence in Multimedia Award for our A Day in the Life video series.
A Day in the Life is an idea our team dreamed up as the centerpiece of a special resource center we created on keeping up with your HIV medications. Every few months, since September 2011, we've posted a new, brief video in which a different person living with HIV takes us into his or her daily life. These individuals come from all walks of life, and represent many different parts of the U.S. They speak openly about the obstacles they experience in taking their medications and managing their health, and the steps they take to try to overcome them.
It's a very real, very honest video series. It's difficult to express how grateful all of us here are to the people who have opened their lives to us -- and to all of you -- by letting us into their homes and sharing with us their strengths and weaknesses, their highs and lows. It's also hard for me to put into words how grateful I personally am for the team of people who've made this series happen: Kellee Terrell, our former news editor (she departed for grad school last summer), who managed the initial launch and vision for the series; Olivia Ford, our executive editor, who is now the series' guiding light and driving force; and the effervescent and ridiculously talented Mark S. King, who has produced all of these videos and conducted many of the interviews.
We're not big on touting our own work; we take huge pride in the quality of our content, and we prefer to let that quality do the talking. But when a group like the NLGJA -- which does tremendous work to ensure that all forms of media are fair, consistent, and accurate with respect to how they cover LGBT issues and people -- feels we're worth calling out, I think it's appropriate to call them out for feeling that we're worthy of the honor, and to thank all of the incredible people within the community and on our team who make what we do possible.
