Ex-Uganda VP Appointed UN Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS

August 6, 2013

The United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon recently named former Ugandan Vice President Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe as special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. Kazibwe was vice president of Uganda from 1993 to 2004 and was the first woman in any African nation to hold such a position. As a trained surgeon, she also serves as a member of the "Champions for an HIV-free Generation" initiative and, until recently, was a senior advisor to the president of Uganda on population and health issues. In her new role, Kazibwe will encourage proactive involvement from all spectrums of society in advancing Africa's AIDS response.
