Massachusetts: Steppingstone Showcases New Programs for HIV Sufferers, Recovering Drug-Users at Downtown Open House

June 3, 2013

The Massachusetts nonprofit Steppingstone, Inc., known for treating addiction, has introduced new programs to reintegrate ex-convicts into society and provide shelter for homeless persons with HIV infection. The organization showcased its new projects at an open house on May 30. Project Re-entering Offenders Achieving Recovery (ROAR) will assist substance-abusing men who are preparing for release from the Bristol County House of Corrections in maintaining their sobriety. In January, Project ROAR started working with inmates within four months of release. The organization also is expanding housing for persons with HIV infection to include advocacy and peer support programs in its Welcome Home Program. The advocacy program will provide mediation with landlords for persons with HIV infection. The organization has nine single- and two-family housing units in the city for homeless persons with HIV infection. The housing program is supervised by the New Bedford Office of Housing and Community Development and will provide free housing.
