Guam: National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) will focus the public's attention on the effects of HIV/AIDS stigma on May 19, National Asian and Pacific Islander HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The department estimates that one-third of Asians and Pacific Islanders are HIV-infected and unaware they have the virus. DPHSS is partnering with Guam's Alternative Lifestyle Association (GALA), GUAHAN Project/WestCare Pacific Islands (WCPI), Bank of Guam, and 76/Circle K to sponsor a number of events to encourage HIV testing.

GALA will hold an open house and screen the Banyan Tree Project's "Taking Root" stories on Wednesday, May 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Dos Amantes Plaza, located on N. Marine Corp Drive, Upper Tumon. The event will feature refreshments and giveaways. Individuals may call (671) 969-5483 for additional information.

The GUAHAN Project/WCPI will have an open house and screen the Banyan Tree Project's "Taking Root" stories from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16. The event will take place at Suite 301, Core Pacific Building, Tamuning. The event will feature refreshments and giveaways. Individuals may call (671) 472-0218 for additional information.

On Friday, May 17, participating organizations will observe "Wave for Awareness" at the ITC Intersection in Tamuning.

Individuals may request information about testing and STD/HIV program services by calling the Guam AIDS Hotline at (671) 734-2437(AIDS) or visiting http://prutehihao.guam.gov.
