District of Columbia Health Clinic Now Recommending Meningitis Vaccination for Some Gay and Bi Men

April 30, 2013

Whitman-Walker Health (WWH), a Washington, D.C. nonprofit community health center specializing in HIV/AIDS and LGBT care, advises vaccinations against bacterial meningitis for gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men who have had intimate contact with partners met through certain social Web sites and digital applications or at bars or parties since September 1, 2012. WWH patients can get the vaccine from their WWH individual health provider; others should contact their own clinician for guidance and vaccinations.

The disease, which has caused deaths among gay men in New York City and Los Angeles, is spread through exposure to an infected person's oral fluids such as through kissing, coughing, sneezing, or sharing utensils and drinking glasses. Symptoms include sudden fever, headache, and stiff neck, which are usually followed by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light, and confusion within three to seven days. The disease can be successfully treated if caught early.
