President Obama's FY14 Budget Reaffirms Commitment to Global Fund

April 12, 2013

President Obama has requested that the U.S. fiscal year (FY) 2014 budget include $1.65 billion for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria and increased funding for U.S. bilateral programs like the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the President's Malaria Initiative. According to Deborah Derrick, president of Friends of the Global Fight, the timely announcement should encourage other funders to make equally generous pledges during the Global Fund's upcoming 2013 Replenishment meeting.

If the final U.S. FY2014 budget includes $1.65 billion for the Global Fund, the United States will be on track to contribute $5 billion over three years. Other donors match every U.S. dollar with an additional two dollars. Derrick stated that bilateral and multilateral programs "depend on each other for mutual success."

Sustained U.S. funding will allow the programs to take advantage of recent scientific advancements and speed up progress on efforts against AIDS, TB, and malaria worldwide. Waiting to take action would allow the diseases to become deadlier -- and more expensive to treat -- as they become drug resistant, according to Mark Dybul, executive director of the Global Fund.
