U.S. News Florida: Magic Johnson's Medicaid Plan for HIV/AIDS Expands to BrowardFebruary 11, 2013 NBA Hall of Famer Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced in April that he had purchased a minority portion of the Coral Gables, Fla., Simply Healthcare Plans. Johnson said that this managed care plan would launch Clear Health Alliance as a Medicaid HMO for HIV/AIDS patients in Miami-Dade County. Johnson will be the face of the marketing campaign. Florida state regulators have given Simply Healthcare Plans approval to expand to Broward County, which ranks second in the United States for AIDS cases per capita; Miami-Dade ranks first. According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Coral Gables-based MBF Healthcare Partners is the majority owner of Simply Healthcare Plans. As of September 30, 2011, membership in the plan includes 28,624 Medicaid; 3,858 Medicare; and 2,119 Healthy Kids members.
