Dr. Ronald Sowa, Ghana's western regional coordinator for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), notes in a recent interview that there is a high prevalence of STIs among the region's female senior high school students. Sowa attributed the high rate to promiscuity and the use of antiseptics and herbal preparations to clean sexual organs, which can kill organisms that protect the lining of the vagina. Sowa also notes that there has been a reduction in the region's HIV cases due to education on HIV prevention. The prevalence rate for pregnant women with HIV was 1.9 percent lower than the national figure of 2.1 percent in 2011.
