Living With HIV

Possible Missed Dose: OK to Skip, or Should I Take Another?
I'm currently taking Complera (rilpivirine/tenofovir/FTC). I'm not sure if I took my dose this morning or if it was just my multivitamin. Can I skip this dose or should I take another? What else can I do to help remind me to take my meds every day?

What Are Green Tea's Risks and Benefits for People Living With HIV?
Can drinking a significant amount of green tea daily boost my CD4 count? I read an old study that suggested green tea could help. But are there any potential interactions between green tea and HIV meds?

Mixed-Status Couples

Magnetic Couple: Can We Have a Great Sex Life?
My wife is HIV negative and I am positive. Is it OK to have sex? Right now, we are clouded by fear of transmission and try not to get intimate. How can we overcome this fear and enjoy our sex life again?

Insurance, Workplace & Legal Concerns

Can My Employer Fire Me for Being HIV Positive?
I currently work the overnight shift for a company I've been employed at for seven years. However, the overnights are too much for me now due to my health and HIV meds. My doctor wrote a note stating my need to stop working nights. Can the company fire me because I can't work nights anymore -- or because I'm HIV positive?

My HIV Status Was Disclosed to the Media: Can I Sue?
What legal action can I take against a nurse who disclosed my HIV status to the media? I was admitted to the emergency room after a PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) episode and the nurse falsely claimed that I spit at her. The charges were dropped in Illinois, but the public and personal damage is irreparable. What can I do?

vote for 2012's strangest but truest post
confused person

There's still time to vote for which "Ask the Experts" post you feel is the strangest. Our forums received another year's worth of HIV transmission questions in 2012, many of which reminded us how much HIV education is still needed. We've selected 10 posts we feel are the "best of the worst" of 2012. They're some of the oddest, most farfetched questions we've seen people ask about HIV.

We're now asking you to vote on which of the 10 finalists represents the most bizarre post from our "Ask the Experts" forums during the past year. Voting is open until Jan. 18; we'll announce the "winners" in our email newsletters the following week.

Is Atripla Causing My Erectile Dysfunction?
I can't seem to hold an erection anymore. Is Atripla (efavirenz/tenofovir/FTC) messing with my sex life? I don't even get firm now. What can I do?

Keith Henry, M.D., responds in the "Managing Side Effects of HIV Treatment" forum

What Do You Know About Unboosted Reyataz?
I'm a woman who's been positive for 26 years. I've been taking Reyataz (atazanavir) and Truvada (tenofovir/FTC) since 2004. My lab numbers are great, but my doctors say I need to lower the Reyataz dosage and add Norvir (ritonavir). But I am not so convinced. I know that taking Reyataz and Truvada alone is not the norm, but I'm worried about the side effects of Norvir. What do you think?

Can I Still Be a Health Care Worker After Hepatitis B Diagnosis?
I tested positive for hepatitis B. Can I still work as a surgical technician, or any health care occupation, for that matter? What factors should I be considering?

What Can I Do About Weight Gain?
(A recent post from the "Living With HIV" board)

At first, I had lost a lot of weight and was actually underweight. But now, I've gained it all back and more, to the point that I'm actually the heaviest I've ever been. Has anyone else had weight issues? Could it be because of the HIV meds?  -- familyfirst

Small Viral Load Increases: Should I Be Concerned?
My viral load was undetectable, but after my last two doctor's visits, it has gone up to 120 and 150. Should I be worried about this?

Can Having the Flu Cause My CD4 Count to Dip?
About two weeks ago when I saw my doctor, my CD4 count was 383 and my CD4 percentage was 22. Then three days ago, my CD4 count dropped to 264 and my CD4 percentage was 19. But I was also dealing with the flu. Could that have caused the drop? I take my meds as prescribed every day. Also, what can I do to get rid of the flu and prevent pneumonia?

HIV Testing & Transmission

My Dad Contracted HIV in 1987: How Was I Born Negative in 1990?
My dad became HIV positive in 1987 after a blood transfusion. He didn't know he was positive until he tested in 1995. I have tested negative regularly. How is it possible? Should I continue to test? Is HIV still dormant in my case or should I be assured I'm negative?
