International News Advocating for Access to Treatment for People Living With HIV in IndiaJanuary 4, 2013 The Delhi Network of Positive People (DNP+) received the Red Ribbon Award at the December 2012 XIX International AIDS Conference. The award recognized the network's advocacy efforts for access to treatment and human rights for HIV-infected people in India. Loon Gangte and a friend founded DNP+ in an addiction rehabilitation center to support HIV-infected people. According to Gangte, DNP+ membership has grown from two people to 1,300 members since 2000. Overcoming high levels of stigma and discrimination is a challenge in India, which has the highest number of HIV-infected people in all Asian Pacific countries. Gangte expressed hope that the Red Ribbon Award would put the international stamp of approval on DNP+ work and attract financial support for the organization. DNP+ will continue to lobby for free antiretroviral treatment and affordable HIV treatment for HIV-infected people in India.
