International News Indonesia Aims to End Reliance on Foreign Aids in Fighting HIV/AIDSDecember 13, 2012 The vice president of Indonesia urged regional leaders in the country to increase funding dedicated to the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, rather than relying on foreign contributions for HIV/AIDS prevention efforts. To complement government prevention and treatment initiatives and interventions targeted to youth, Vice President Boediono listed ways that the private sector could participate. Including HIV prevention and treatment in corporate social programs was his first recommendation; halting transmission from mothers to babies is also a major opportunity to reduce HIV incidence. The vice president stated that HIV/AIDS is a "concentrated epidemic" among certain populations -- commercial sex workers, intravenous drug users, and homosexuals -- in which HIV/AIDS prevalence is greater than 5 percent.
