U.S. News Alabama: Birmingham-Area Collaboration Receives $750K Grant for AIDS ProjectDecember 7, 2012 AIDS United has awarded approximately $750,000 to a new joint effort involving the University of Alabama at Birmingham's 1917 Clinic and Birmingham AIDS Outreach. The money is earmarked to fund Birmingham Access to Care -- a three-year program new to Alabama that will identify individuals living with HIV or AIDS who are no longer receiving necessary care and attempt to get them back into care. According to a university official, Scott Batey, the new project is important because those who are not receiving appropriate care carry higher virus levels that can make them more likely to spread the infection to others. Batey estimates the program could assist between 600 and 750 individuals.
