Live CDC Twitter Chat Addressed HIV Among Youth

On December 4, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) held a live Twitter Chat focusing on HIV among youth in the United States, featuring CDC Director Tom Frieden. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC's Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, and Howell Wechsler, director of CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health, also joined in the chat to answer questions and discuss the role of parents, schools, community-based organizations, health-care providers, and resources such as the Internet in making sure that youth receive prevention education, HIV testing, and care. A new report released last week by CDC demonstrates that one in four new HIV infections occur in youth aged 13–24 years, and that many youth are not getting tested. Approximately 60 percent of all youth with HIV do not know that they are infected and are not getting treatment, which can lead them to unknowingly pass the virus on to others.
