U.S. News Washington D.C. Tailors HIV and AIDS Talk to SeniorsOctober 19, 2012 With one in five of newly diagnosed HIV cases being someone 50 or older, officials in the nation's capital are asking senior citizens to think about HIV and AIDS. Washington has one of the highest HIV infection rates in the country. Officials state that older individuals are often diagnosed later and are more ill because they do not realize they are at risk for HIV. Health officials now plan to spend $150,000 a year over at least the next two years to reach out specifically to senior citizens to speak to them about HIV and AIDS. However, there is realization that this is very different from talking to adolescents, and officials have developed a program specifically geared for older adults only.
