U.S. Democrats Introduce Cure for AIDS Act

A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives would establish a $100 million fund dedicated solely to researching a cure for HIV/AIDS. The bill would allocate $20 million annually for five years toward this goal. "This bill provides the medical research community with the resources it needs to find that cure so that we can finally put an end to this worldwide epidemic," said Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.), who introduced it with Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.). According to a statement from the representatives, the federal government spent $27.7 billion on HIV/AIDS, chiefly on prevention and treatment, in fiscal year 2012. "Yet many experts believe that a $100 million investment into cure research will make significant progress toward ending this epidemic entirely," they wrote.
