Counter Corbett's Cuts!
August 3, 2012
ACT UP Philly reports that Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has cut General Assistance funds for people living on disability (while cutting corporate taxes). This program provides a measly yet critical $205 per month to 70,000 residents in the state who use it for housing, health, and transportation services.
Many people who need HIV, recovery, and housing services will become homeless and even more impoverished. We know this will inevitably increase the risk of HIV and morbidity among people living with HIV and drug users.
Many of the Philly-based We Can End AIDS mobilization marchers will suffer from these cuts. PA activists staged a demonstration and plan further actions, including a meeting with the Governor's office on Tuesday, August 7.
We need to show our brothers and sisters that we stand behind them.
HOW? Let's flood the Governor before Tuesday, August 7th with emails and phone calls at 717-787-2500 and firstname.lastname@example.org.
WHAT? Demand that he restore the funding for General Assistance, and provide more funding to house and care for people with disabilities. Take the money out of the corporations, NOT from people living with HIV and other conditions.
WHY? You can read more and view the demonstration here: Philadelphia Inquirer article and video.
