AIDS Charity Honors Gates on Eve of Global Conference

July 23, 2012

At a Kennedy Center gala Saturday night in Washington, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) presented its "Award of Courage" to Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates. Through his Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates has given more than $2.5 billion in grants to HIV organizations around the world, as well as $1.4 billion to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. Gates accepted the honor on behalf of all scientists, health workers, and those who have died from or are living with HIV. "What's important is to remember that we can continue to make these breakthroughs if we stay committed," Gates said. "I'm optimistic ... that we will develop these new tools ... and that we will make AIDS history. Working together, I know we will."
