California: More Money From San Francisco's AIDS Walk

Event organizers say more funding will be distributed to the local beneficiaries of AIDS Walk San Francisco. San Francisco AIDS Foundation, which oversees the July 15 event, overhauled the process by which other service agencies applied for grants, resulting in fewer but larger awards. This year $255,000 will be allocated to other organizations -- a 6 percent boost over last year's $241,000 disbursement, said James Loduca, an SFAF spokesperson.

"We completely revamped the community grants for AIDS Walk San Francisco to better align funding with the goals of the Department of Public Health and SFAF," Loduca said. Those goals include a focus on testing and treatment. In addition to offering technical assistance, SFAF streamlined the reporting process for agencies and reduced lag time for distributing the funds. SFAF is funding 35 grants, down from the 50 it provided last year, Loduca said.

Grant recipients will be announced the week of the walk, which starts and ends in Sharon Meadow at Golden Gate Park. There is no minimum amount that participants must raise. For more information, visit www.aidswalk.net/sanfran.
