UN Chief Calls for More Progress in Fight Against HIV/AIDS

June 13, 2012

Monday at the UN General Assembly meeting on HIV/AIDS, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged member nations to ratchet-up their assistance in order to reach key objectives by 2015.

"I am here to ask you to do even more so that we can win the race," Ban said. "We have to cut the number of new HIV infections by 1 million by 2015."

Meeting this and other five-year targets, including ending pediatric infections, will require reaching out to high-risk groups, said Ban, citing sex workers, women and young girls, injecting drug users, and men who have sex with men.

"Women and children deserve special attention -- women need sexual and reproductive health services," Ban said. "HIV-positive mothers must have antiretroviral drugs so their babies will be born HIV-free." "An AIDS-free generation is a generation that can help end poverty," he added.

UNAIDS recently urged the eight member states comprising the West African Economic and Monetary Union to form new partnerships to address HIV/AIDS.
