June 1, 2012
As soon as last year's race ended, Steven and Jim knew that they would race again this year, and several of the crew members knew they would be returning as well.
But we knew that RAAM 2012 was going to be different. We had learned so much from our rookie year we knew we could improve our time and would come to the race with new skills, a new approach and new goals.
Last year, we came in eighth; this year we plan to finish in the top three. Our confidence not only stems from adding two racers who are RAAM veterans-Patrick Autissier and Glenn Dreury (who replaces Matt Roy) are RAAM veterans who have actually been on winning teams and Patrick has done RAAM as a solo rider-but from a crew with far more experience. Patrick is bringing along his crew chief, Rob Miller, MD, who will be our team physician and will be helping Patrick accomplish his research goals. In addition, Rich Chapman, who was one of the "friendly foe" competitors on the Crank Addicts, will be joining us as a mechanic, and his brother, who was also one of his crew members, will be joining us as well.
In addition, we have partnered with a very strong advocate: The AIDS Policy Project. APP is working hard to get more research for not just treatment, but for a cure. While the team's mission is to show that with the right treatment for HIV, anything is possible, our goal, and I'm sure the goal of everyone who is living with HIV, is to find a cure.
We have put a link to their website on our website, and a button to make donating to them easy. Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 for APP. I'd encourage all of our followers to go to our website and donate to AIDS Policy Project. They are making a real difference in getting researchers moving in the direction of a cure.
This year, I am hoping to blog, update Facebook and Twitter a lot more often than last year. There will certainly be places with "dead air" and no cell phone connection, but as long as I'm connected, our followers will be connected as well.
And if you are on the RAAM route, give us a shout of encouragement as we race down the road!
Next stop: Oceanside!
