Georgia University Creates Public Health Institute

May 22, 2012

Improving the state's health profile is the goal of the newly created Institute of Public and Preventive Health at Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta. The institute will host community programs and research issues including type 2 diabetes, infant mortality, teenage pregnancy, obesity, and HIV/AIDS. Georgia ranks high among U.S. states for these health challenges, and 30 of its counties have lower life expectancy figures than some Third World nations. The institute will be staffed by almost 40 university faculty members, and more faculty will be recruited.
