• Elizabeth Gore, Huffington Post "Global Motherhood": Gore, director of global partnerships with the United Nations Foundation, writes about how motherhood has changed her perspective when working in the Kakuma Refugee Camp on the border of Kenya and South Sudan. "The thought of grabbing my daughter and running from harm for a week or more is frightening. But the prospect of finally reaching safety and then losing her to one mosquito bite is incomprehensible," she writes, noting efforts by the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the foundation's "Nothing But Nets" campaign to distribute bednets in the camp to help prevent malaria (5/14).
• Anne Goddard, Huffington Post "Global Motherhood": A recent report from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) found that progress on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) "related to maternal health have made the smallest amount of headway," Goddard, president and CEO of ChildFund International, writes. Noting "[t]he problem is most acute in sub-Saharan Africa, a region that accounts for literally half of the world's maternal, newborn and child deaths," Goddard describes a program in Senegal run by ChildFund and its partners and supported by USAID. She continues, "While we may fall short of achieving the MDG target by 2015, it is time to redouble our efforts so that we can achieve real and lasting progress" (5/14).
