Vermont House Asks FDA to Lift Blood-Giving Ban

In a 129-2 vote, the Vermont House asked the Food and Drug Administration to lift its lifetime ban on blood donations by men who have sex with men. Opponents of the ban say it is not scientifically or medically necessary because HIV testing protocols have improved since 1986, when the policy was instituted. They also note that Britain and some international health groups have revised their standards regarding MSM blood donations. The resolution calls for replacing the lifetime ban with a prohibition on blood donations for one year following male-to-male sexual contact.
