REACH Grantee Celebrates Legislative Victory

REACH grantee Women with A Vision (WWAV), in collaboration with Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) recently celebrated a significant legislative victory in Louisiana.

Advocates helped to change a law requiring people to register as sex offenders if they were convicted of a "crime against nature by solicitation." U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman ruled that the law violates the constitutional rights of people who were required to register as sex offenders.

The state Legislature had amended the 200-year-old law last year so that anyone convicted of a "crime against nature by solicitation" no longer will be required to register as a sex offender. But the change didn't apply to roughly 400 people who already had been convicted of the crime and were registered sex offenders.

"We believe that this is not just a win for us" said WWAV Executive Director Deon Haywood in her letter to stakeholders. "This is a win for every group that has ever been criminalized. Our win today proves that when we stand with folks who have been wrongly charged, we can make a difference."
