Alabama Leaders Look for Ways to Survive Budget Cuts

March 20, 2012

Gov. Robert Bentley has directed legislators and department heads to find more than 10 percent in cuts to the state budget for the remainder of the current fiscal year ending Sept. 30. State Health Officer Don Williamson said the cuts mean his agency may have to reduce the number of patients in a program receiving AIDS drugs and conduct fewer inspections of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Williamson said he plans to gradually make the cuts rather than initiating them all at once.
