New York City Hitting Hepatitis C
March 19, 2012
New York City is planning a new hepatitis C awareness and testing campaign, the "Check Hep C" initiative. The campaign targets high-risk populations in Harlem, the South Bronx, central Brooklyn, and parts of Queens and Staten Island; these include injecting drug users, people living with HIV, and immigrants from countries with high hepatitis prevalence like Egypt, Pakistan, and the former Soviet Union. The city Health Department will award up to $1.3 million in contracts to community-based health care providers to conduct hepatitis C counseling and testing. Financial support for the campaign is being provided by the Fund for Public Health, the fundraising arm of the Health Department.
