San Francisco Health Official to Lead National AIDS Policy Office

March 15, 2012

President Obama on Wednesday named Dr. Grant Colfax, the chief of the HIV prevention division of the San Francisco Department of Public Health, to lead the Office of National AIDS Policy. "Grant's expertise will be key as we continue to face serious challenges and take bold steps to meet them," the president said in a statement. "I look forward to his leadership in the months and years to come." Colfax will be tasked with overseeing the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, which calls for reducing new HIV infections, promoting HIV treatment and tackling health disparities, especially among minority groups. Colfax's experience includes work in San Francisco General Hospital's HIV/AIDS outpatient clinic and in the hospital's Ward 5A, the nation's first HIV inpatient program. Colfax's current position will be filled by Tracey Packer, the deputy director of HIV prevention.
