Prevention/Epidemiology Brazil Hands Out Nearly Half-Billion CondomsMarch 14, 2012 Brazil's Health Ministry says it distributed a record-high number of free condoms last year: almost a half-billion, or 2.5 for every person in the country. The 493 million condoms cost the government about $19 million. Some 90 percent of all the condoms used in Brazil are provided through a national campaign to fight AIDS and other STDs. Brazil's government buys and gives away more condoms than any other nation, according to the ministry, and schools are included among the distribution sites.
