Earlier this month President Obama reached a compromise lauded by the public on allowing insurance to provide coverage for preventative services. This included expanded access and coverage for contraception, an important tool in the fight for HIV/AIDS prevention.
The Stand Up for Health Care organization reports that the Republican Party is making a hard push to counter the compromise, by moving a proposal that would deny any coverage for preventative services on the basis of moral beliefs. The U.S. Senate may vote on the bill this week so please take action immediately.
If passed, this proposal can set a dangerous precendent with alarming scenarios: denial of birth control to women, denial of coverage on HIV medications based on gender/sexuality, denial of coverage for contraceptions that are important to overall comprehensive sexual health. Currently, Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) has proposed an amendment that effectively renders Obama's compromise useless, by allowing ANY employer in ANY industry to deny health coverage for ANY preventive care service, simply by saying that it goes against their moral code.
