HIV/AIDS and American Indians/Alaska Natives

  • American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/NA) have a 40% higher rate of AIDS and HIV infection as compared to the white population.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native men have a 40% higher AIDS rate as compared to white men.
  • American Indian/Alaska Native women have twice the AIDS rate, and are 3.4 times more likely to die from AIDS, as compared to white women.
  • In 2009, American Indian/Alaska Native women were 2.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV infection, as compared to the White female population.
