Petition to GOP Leadership: Banning Federal Funding for Syringe Exchange Programs Puts Lives in Jeopardy!

February 8, 2012

AIDS United

"It took AIDS activists 21 years to get Congress to restore federal funding for local programs that supply clean needles to drug users. It's taken Republicans a couple of months of hardball negotiations to get the ban reinstated."

-- Bob Egelko, San Francisco Chronicle, Dec. 25, 2011

In December, 2011, Congress passed a spending bill that reinstated a ban on the use of federal funds for syringe exchange programs (SEPs). We cannot go another 20 years depriving injection drug users from critical services that include clean syringes, counseling and treatment services, as well as HIV testing!

Opponents of SEPs, the White House, and even Members of Congress who have historically been supportive on this issue all need to hear from us loud and clear over the coming months.

Our first step is to let those who led the charge to reinstate the ban know that we are holding them accountable. Speaker John Boehner (OH- R) and Chairman Hal Rogers (KY- R) have been identified as the two Members of Congress most responsible for reinstating the ban on the use of federal funds for syringe exchange. Please join us in letting them know we strongly object to their actions by signing this petition today, and please spread this alert far and wide.

The petition will be delivered in person with as many signatures as possible by February 15!
