NYC Council Votes to Sue DHS Over "Prove You're Homeless" PolicyNovember 29, 2011
Today the City Council General Welfare Committee with the support of Speaker Christine Quinn voted unanimously to sue the Department of Homeless Services over a new policy to turn away shelter seekers if they had recently been couch surfing. "I'm proud of the NYC Council's General Welfare Committee for voting 9-0 on the lawsuit against Mike Bloomberg's unjust homeless policy," Councilmember Jumaane Williams announced on Twitter. Seth Diamond, Commissioner of DHS isn't backing down from the policy, telling AM New York this morning that this is a "very strong policy ... that ensures shelters are reserved for people with no options." Before the vote this morning AM New York reported on the upcoming vote, and also stressed the importance of this lawsuit, as it marked the first time Speaker Quinn has taken a stance against a Bloomberg supported policy.
