International News Philippine Government Concerned on Rising HIV/AIDS CasesDecember 12, 2011 In a recent interview on state-run radio, a government representative expressed worry over the growing number of HIV/AIDS cases in the Philippines. "This [increasing number of cases] is a point of concern for us," said Abigail Valte, deputy presidential spokesperson. "The [Department of Health] is acting and taking immediate steps to arrest the rise." Those measures include an informational campaign, Valte said, noting the importance of building the public's understanding of how HIV is transmitted. The latest DOH data show that the Philippines have logged 7,884 HIV/AIDS cases since 1984, and that 200 new cases were registered in October alone.
