International News Mozambique Brings HIV/AIDS Cases Down: PresidentDecember 8, 2011 President Armando Guebuza marked World AIDS Day by spotlighting Mozambique's progress against the epidemic. "More than 250,000 HIV patients access antiretroviral treatment; this represents a significant increase if compared with only 7,000 HIV patients in 2004 who accessed antiretroviral treatment," he said, adding that new cases are down as well. In addition, 70,000 pregnant women are receiving treatment to avoid transmitting HIV to their infants, the state AIM news agency reported. Guebuza called on young people to take steps to avoid infection -- for their own sake as well as for the country's future.
