International News Chinese Premier Promises More Help for AIDS PatientsDecember 8, 2011 In a World AIDS Day discussion with patients, researchers, and doctors, Premier Wen Jiabao pledged additional steps to improve treatment access and end HIV-related discrimination. The State Council next year will introduce special medical assistance in regions hard-hit by AIDS to ease the financial burden on patients, Wen said. "Detailed measures are being drafted by relevant departments," he said, noting that some AIDS drugs will be included in China's essential medicine system, meaning their prices will be controlled, and they could be covered by basic health insurance. Wen further said the government will increase its financial aid to families impoverished by AIDS, raising their allowance and providing housing for homeless patients.
