International News Nigeria Seeks Improved Funding for Anti-HIV/AIDS Campaign in AfricaDecember 7, 2011 African nations should be categorized into two groups to better fight HIV/AIDS, a Nigerian official said Monday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the 16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa. "The issue of financing has to be shared," said John Idoko, director-general of Nigeria's National Agency for the Control of AIDS. "Some countries are doing better than others in terms of their economy and, as a result, those countries can actually look after themselves, so the money that goes to them can go to poorer countries." Noting that Nigeria's National Health Insurance Scheme is working well, Idoko called on leaders to develop interventions to properly fund health insurance. State and local governments must be involved in funding the fight against AIDS, he added. Xinhua News Agency 12.06.2011 This article was provided by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
