Philippine Health Chief Hit for Anti-Gay Comments

December 5, 2011

Philippine Health Secretary Enrique Ona came under fire after suggesting Friday at an AIDS conference that health workers should survey the homes of gay youths and warn their parents about potentially risky behavior. "Parents should rein in their homosexual children and get them tested," continued Ona during a discussion about voluntary testing for at-risk youths. A Philippines LGBT group on Monday called for Ona's resignation. The minister's office did not immediately return a call seeking comment. A government spokesperson, Abigail Valte, said "we do not support any discrimination."
