HASA Cases Up More Than 1,200 Since Last YearNovember 17, 2011
The most recent data from the HIV/AIDS Services Administration shows that there were 1,277 more cases handled by HASA in September 2011 than during the same month last year. "The increase in HASA's caseload over the past couple years indicates that the economic crisis is hitting people living with HIV/AIDS particularly hard," said VOCAL-NY's Executive Director Sean Barry. "This isn't a surprise given that communities of color are disproportionately affected by both the HIV epidemic and high unemployment." "We're hoping the city recognizes that in a time of economic crisis we need to be increasing the support for housing people with HIV, not reducing it," said Kristin Goodwin, Housing Works Director of NYC Policy and Organizing.
