Elton John Offers Support to Homeless Women in Ukraine
November 10, 2011
On Wednesday in Kiev, Elton John threw his support behind a project to help homeless young Ukrainian women access HIV testing, social services, and medical care. The Ukraine-based ANTIAIDS Foundation issued a statement announcing the Elton John AIDS Foundation's commitment to help and quoting John as saying, "It's crucial for victory over HIV/AIDS all over the world -- to protect young girls and women who are living on the streets. They are highly vulnerable to HIV, and the goal of our project is to find new ways to help them." ANTIAIDS said up to 100,000 children and young people in Ukraine live on the streets, and it pledged $450,000 for the outreach. ANTIAIDS is led by Olena Pinchuk; she is the wife of wealthy industrialist Viktor Pinchuk and the daughter of former President Leonid Kuchma.
