U.S. News UGA Professor Gets $1 Million to Study DNANovember 4, 2011 The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $1.13 million grant to support University of Georgia-based research on "parasitic" DNA. David Garfinkel, a professor of biochemistry, will examine how cells respond to assaults from HIV and other viruses, as well as to conditions like macular degeneration. He will use baker's yeast to study the way DNA molecules duplicate and insert themselves into the genome. The yeast, Garfinkel said, has the same basic cellular makeup as more complex life forms but is easier to work with.
