Wisconsin Senate to Debate Abstinence Education

November 2, 2011

School sex education classes would be required to stress abstinence over contraception under a bill up for a vote today in the Wisconsin Senate. The measure would reverse legislation passed two years ago when Democratic lawmakers were the majority; that law stipulates that the classes teach contraceptive use as one part of a multi-faceted curriculum. The new bill would drop the mandate for contraceptive instruction; instead, schools would be required to teach abstinence as the only reliable way to prevent pregnancy and STDs, and to stress the benefits of marriage.
