Indiana: IU Research Grants to Honor Former U.S. Surgeon General

October 28, 2011

The Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention at IU said it plans to create an endowed research grant honoring Dr. C. Everett Koop, former surgeon general of the United States. Reflecting the work for which Koop is renowned, the grant will support doctoral student research in HIV/AIDS prevention. Doctoral students from across the nation can apply for the $600 grants, which will be awarded each spring. The center's decision to create the endowment in Koop's name was made because of his work to raise AIDS awareness in the 1980s. "Dr. Koop put the needs of the nation above before any political aspects," said William Yarber, the center's senior director and a professor in the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. Though Koop's actions were controversial, Yarber said public health experts "realized he did a very courageous and heroic thing by providing education about AIDS when people were hesitant to do that, and political leaders didn't want to get involved." The announcement was made on Oct. 13, the eve of Koop's 95th birthday.
