U.S. News New York: 133 Ride to Combat AIDSOctober 7, 2011 Braking the Cycle, a September bike ride that began in Boston and ended at New York's LGBT Community Center, raised more than $401,000 for the center's HIV/AIDS programs. The event has grown dramatically from its first staging in 2003, when 47 riders took part: This year, 133 people made the 285-mile trek. Clay Williams of Positive Pedalers, who has participated since 2009, said, "The challenge of the ride is like the challenge of living with HIV -- there are setbacks, you hit the wall, and wonder, 'Can I really climb another hill,' and then you do. The ride is a perfect example of what a community can do when it cares and pulls together to reach its goals."
