Marsha Ambrosius Uses Music Video to Teach About HIVBy Candace Y.A. Montague September 23, 2011
I don't generally watch music videos because they are just plain old disappointing. Music videos have gotten away from the story telling format that once matched the lyrics of the song and have basically boiled down to just waterfalls of graphic, soft core pornographic images. However, I tuned in to VH1's Soul Player last night just for kicks and was pleasantly surprised. Marsha Ambrosius, one half of the British R&B duo Floetry, has used her sensual hit song to infuse a lesson about safe sex and HIV. And it's a good one. (Yes, I know the video has been out since June. I will admit I am pretty slow.) Late Nights, Early Mornings is the title track from her breakout solo album. The video shows a musical story line of two dates happening simultaneously. One date (with Ambrosius) shows the couple enjoying each other's company with negative signs above their heads. The other date shows a couple with the male partner having a red positive sign above his head and the female with a negative. Both dates end in the bedroom with a condom negotiation. You can probably guess how the negative/positive negotiation went. This is not the first time Ambrosius has used her video to give a message. Her video for Far Away sends a strong anti-homophobia message to the viewers. Although I'm not happy about the black male in the Late Nights video being the HIV positive one, I am happy to see that she is using her music to decrease stigma. It's direct and comprehensible. How about that? Thank you to Ms. Ambrosius for being a real instrument for change. Get e-mail notifications every time Candace's blog is updated.
