Staying Adherent in the Midst of Early Childhood

Before I became a mother, I rarely had problems with missing my medication doses. I guess life was calmer and I had less to think about. Being in the midst of early childhood has often left me sleep-deprived. Whether it was the constant wakefulness of early infancy, cutting teeth, or more recently potty training and being sick, as a mom, I often find myself struggling to face mornings! I find that I am most likely to forget my meds when I am running late and particularly if I don't sit down to eat (the eating reminds me to take my meds with the food).

There are several things that have helped me to stay adherent. First of all, having someone else to remind me! In the first weeks after my daughter's birth, when she needed to take medication as well, I never had a problem. Thankfully, she is HIV free and no longer needs medication! Now my husband and I take our meds together.

The other important factor for us is to place the meds where we can see them -- and whether or not we have taken them. But make this place somewhere a toddler can't reach! One concern of ours is that most of our medications come in non-child-proof bottles. We have taken to using old, cleaned, child-proof medicine bottles that we fill with a day's worth of pills and place in the cabinet near the coffee -- safe, and we always see it!
