The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $1 million grant to support HIV research at UNM. Vojo Deretic, a professor and chair of UNM's Molecular Genetics and Microbiology Department, will lead the research. The team's first Gates Foundation grant, received two years ago, was to develop the feasibility of applying autophagy, a molecular process that uses the body's immune system to prevent infectious diseases, to HIV. With the new funds, the team will screen for drugs that can intercept HIV at several stages, Deretic said.
