U.S. News New York: AIDS Fighter -- Making Apple HealthyAugust 9, 2011 New York City's Health Department gives out millions of male condoms annually, and its assistant commissioner for HIV/AIDS prevention and control wants women to give the female version a try, too. "It gives the edge to women who can start the safe-sex conversation," said Dr. Monica Sweeney. "They don't have to beg anyone to put on a condom. It's a really easy way to protect yourself." A total of 109,446 New Yorkers have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, and Sweeney estimated that including those who do not know they are infected would result in a number 20 percent higher. Still, "I don't want people to feel there's no hope. Practically no babies are being born in New York City with HIV," she said, noting that only six infected babies were born there last year, and "it used to be between 300 and 400 a year."
