International News Italy Hosts AIDS Meet but Fails to Pay for Aid FundJuly 25, 2011 Participants at the 6th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention, held in Rome, decried the Italian government's decision to stop contributions to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. The country is $260 million behind in fulfilling 2009 and 2010 pledges to the Global Fund and has not designated any funding for 2011. Italy did not register any high-level official to take part in the conference, which convened more than 5,500 experts, health professionals and scientists. On July 20, the conference's final day, Health Minister Ferrucio Fazio was heckled while making a speech.
